Over-reaction to Oil Spill? What is ratio of oil to water?
66I did a little research into the Gulf of Mexico. It contains 2,434,000 cubic kilometers of water (6.43 * 10^17 or 643 quadrillion gallons). In other words, the volume of the Gulf is:
643,000,000,000,000,000 gallons.
I've seen estimates ranging from 125 million gallons of spilled oil to 250 million. Let's go even higher, to 300 million gallons spilled:
300,000,000 divided by 643,000,000,000,000,000 gallons
yields 0.00000005 % of oil/water. Even if we limit the area to just 1/100th of
the gulf, that's still 0.000005%.
The best water filters filter out 99.999% of toxins, or all but 0.001%. So, in
a few years, the concentration of oil in the gulf will be so small that even
the best water filters won't be able to filter out the oil.
So, please, a little more common sense and less dramatics. Yes, there will be a
mess. Yes, some animals will die. And yes the water has areas where the oil is highly
concentrated. But, this will eventually
thin itself out, like what always happens, and things will be back to normal
with little impact on the fishing and ocean wildlife.
Actually, the only impact we'll feel is the impact of a further damaged economy due to Obama shutting down the other 99.999% of oil wells that follow proper safety guidelines and procedures and have not had any oil spills during their 10-20 and even 30 years of operation.
"Make no mistake about it," your entire life is built upon the oil industry. The mouse you're clicking, the deodorant you're wearing, the screen you're looking at... in fact, probably 80-90% of your household items have some sort of oil or oil by-product in it. Unless you're willing and able to swim to a remote island (you won't be able to use a boat, because much of that is even made of oil by-products), and live entirely off the land and in a thatch-roof hut, you will not be able to live oil-free in our world.
So, let's figure out a way to use less, and be safer and cleaner while we use and develop it. But to have aspirations to use NO oil is essentially the same as demanding that money grow on trees.
(Did you catch my analogy to the entirely impractical and unrealistic wishes of an uninformed child?)

You sound like a subversive individual. How dare you challenge the dominant politically correct thinking!
If you keep on thinking for yourself I will have to report you the local Democrat party precinct captain for punishment.
Duh, oil sticks together and forms globs...There the concentration is extremely high 99.99%. Remember, oil and water do not mix...especially sea water and oil...very flawed scientific reasoning...why don't you go and drink the water along the shores and see what happens to you, like the life that depends upon it...
I agree with Steven Sedimayr when you mix Corexit with oil it becomes toxic and that is why people and animals are dying. Re mediation with our oil digester according to a Lab Report is the SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM and will take away the toxins etc. Contact Bioremediation Inc. check the web site www.bioemediationinc.com and see for yourself. I am a consultant for them and I own Industrial Chemical & Environmental Co. Having a Veteran Owned Business.

That is awesome! I love your research and satire combined in this piece!
